This October, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, BRASS, Inc. was featured on Kentucky Edition, a public affairs program produced by KET and aired on PBS. The segment, titled "Shelter and Support for Domestic Violence Survivors," offers viewers a look inside the work we do every day for survivors across our ten-county region.

Reporter Laura Rogers spoke with BRASS, Inc. CEO Tori Henninger about the scope of our services — from emergency shelter and crisis intervention to long-term housing assistance and financial empowerment. Tori shared that BRASS, Inc. averages 11 crisis calls a day and that our shelter operates at capacity nearly 100% of the year. "I think we have a lot of resources," she said. "I definitely don't think that we have enough."

The segment also features Nadia, a BRASS, Inc. survivor whose story is a powerful testament to what's possible when someone finds safety and support. A native of Ukraine who came to BRASS, Inc. ten years ago fleeing an abusive marriage, Nadia has since built an independent life — finding housing, opening a bank account, and earning her driver's license at 57. "I have hope now because of BRASS," she said.

The piece touches on the many dimensions of domestic violence — not just physical abuse, but emotional, psychological, and financial abuse as well. It's a reminder that the road to safety is rarely simple, and that the support survivors need extends far beyond a shelter bed.

We're grateful to Kentucky Edition and KET for helping us share this story with viewers across the Commonwealth. Shining a light on the realities of domestic violence — and on the strength of the people who survive it — is part of how we build a community that refuses to look away.
